Project 365 – VICTORY!

December 24, 2010

…on the 11th day of Castmas the Chrazzas gave to me…

So here we are Casta fans – I’m sure you can no doubt tell from the oh so subtle title and my prolific singing in the soundclip above that I DID IT!  I finally stuck to a New Year’s resolution and completed one of the stupidest and most arduous tasks I’ve ever undertaken!

But here I am at the other side and you know what? I feel great. Not only have I finally managed to verse myself on a great deal of “classic” cinema, I’ve also managed to keep very abreast of the newest cinema releases throughout the year, as well as finding a few hidden gems I might have otherwise missed were I not scouring the world for movies every waking second of my life. Add in the fact that I have a full time job, have been on a couple of extended holidays, watched a ridiculous amount of TV and have a very time hungry passion outside of work and watching 365 films has been no mean feat.

People have asked me whether I think watching all these movies has been a waste of time, and I can quite honestly say that no, it hasn’t. Except maybe for Knowing… For the most part, watching movies has been a way of killing dead time either on the way to work, at the gym, on longer journeys, or just when I’m sat at home completely broke. Fair to say I could have used the time more constructively but that just wouldn’t have been me :p

I am a little shocked however that I managed to watch over fifty in the first three weeks; in comparison the last fifty took me over twice as long at nearly eight weeks. God I was a loser at the beginning of 2010. Look how much has changed.

Another thing people have asked me is what I’m going to do with all my free time next year. Well I’m thinking of splitting the time I spent watching movies (ave. 12.8 hours a week) into thirds and still spending a portion of that watching movies (for Casta’s sake!), the second third maybe doing something useful like the gym or something (where conveniently I can watch movies whilst on the exercise bike…) and the least third I want to spend concentrating on my own creative writing. Thinking on it, I might just use the second third on Casta instead.

The rest of this post is largely going to be further info for the datahounds and statcats like me out there, so if you’re not interested in that kind of thing then you’re probably just as well stopping here.

Before you go though I’d urge you to check out the picture just below (it’s the poster for every movie I watched this year in order and took me HOURS to make!)  and also to click on both the picture above and  the thumbnail of Marty Me at the bottom of this post – they’re very special for a reason that should become clear as soon as you click on them!

Thanks then to everyone who has supported me on my stupid venture throughout the year and lent me DVDs, come to the cinema with me (usually against their will), given me Orange Wednesday codes, let me change the channel or simply suggested movies I should watch.
You guys were great.

But I was better.

If you’re still with me, here’s some stats for you!

This year I watched;

  • 365 new movies (plus Toy Story 2 3D and the Back to the Future rerelease)
  • 115 of these were in the cinema (31.33%)
  • 135 were cinematic releases this year (36.78%)
  • The average length of those movies was one hundred and eight minutes (and forty nine seconds)

I spent;

  • 39,929 minutes watching new movies. Or twenty seven days, seventeen hours and twenty nine minutes if you prefer.
  • 12,148 (30.4%) of these minutes were spent in the cinema. That’s eight days, ten hours and twenty eight minutes.
  • The most films watched in any one day was five (twice, once in week three and once, unsurprisingly on the last day of the EIFF)
  • The most films watched in a week was nineteen (week two)
  • The most consecutive days without watching any movies was fifteen (whilst in Canada – although I did try and watch both Yojimbo and Weird Science but fell asleep in both and as such they don’t make the 365)

The best of these movies will be announced in the Castatrophies tomorrow.

For those who think this amount of film watching has been excessive, I’ll happily point out that I didn’t watch any movies on 140 days (includes those from now up to the end of the year), which accounts for 38% of the year. Ner ner!

Project 365 – Half Year Review

July 7, 2010

Well well well! It’ been some time since I’ve done one of these (as evidenced by the sheer number of films above) but what better time to catch up than when we’re in the business of catching up?

So the 1st of July was the 182nd day of the year and thus fell exactly half way from start to finish. Like a mid point. Gee, I’m clever today. Enough ramble, time for FACTS and ANALYSIS!

In the first six months of the year I saw two hundred and five films, of which fifty six were at the cinema (accounting for 27.32% of all films watched). A further seven were cinematic releases this year that I caught since being released on DVD which, when added to the fifty six previous means I’ve seen sixty three cinematic releases so far, accounting for 30.73% of all films seen. The total runtime of these films (as gathered from IMDB and Wikipedia) is a mammoth twenty two thousand, five hundred and eighty seven minutes (it looks more impressive in words) which translates to fifteen days, sixteen hours and twenty seven minutes watching movies – of which five thousand, nine hundred and ninety one minutes were spent actually watching movies in the cinema (not accounting for trailers) – that’s four days, three hours and fifty one minutes!

I ♥ data analysis.

The films then!

Project 365 – Back in Action

May 12, 2010

Well I think it’s about time I brought you up to speed on project 365. As mentioned a while ago I was finding the whole thing too easy and so decided to try and watch the entirety of Lost. Truth be told I actually managed to do this a few weeks ago and so, as well as having a three week holiday in Canada, doing my back in and moving house, I’ve also managed to get myself fully up to date with 24, Breaking Bad, Flashforward, Modern Family, The Office, Parks & Recreation and the Big Bang Theory.

Whilst pummelling all that I did still manage to see some films, but nowhere near as many as previously, at one point I even managed to go twenty four days seeing only a single movie in the middle. In the sixty five days from hiatus start I managed to see twenty eight movies which pales somewhat to the one hundred and twenty one I saw in the sixty three days before it.

Whatever the weather I’m still on track and am feeling refreshed from not having watched quite so many films recently. I’d better get back to business and build up a good lead now so I can make myself do something else stupid before I finish…

Suggestions are always welcome – either leave me a comment here or look to the right for other ways to get in touch.

Enough waffle.

March 9, 2010

Hiatus Chris? Surely not! Is this all going to fizzle out like everything else you do? What are you playing at?!

Yes, Yes, No and GIVE ME A MINUTE TO EXPLAIN!

Okay so at the moment I’m around twice as far ahead in my goal of watching 365 films this year as I need to be at this point in time. The two main reasons for starting the project in the first place were:

1. To catch up on all those “classic” films I really should have seen by now.

2. The challenge.

See the thing is, whilst I’ve very much been sticking to point one, point two hasn’t really come into it and as of yet there hasn’t been any challenge involved at all. As alluded to in our most recent episode, the malaise has kicked in and I certainly feel that in a lot of cases, I’m watching films just for the sake of crossing another one off the list and that was never really the point.

So here’s where the additional challenge comes in… In 2004 there was a TV show released which a few of the more eagle eyed listeners (ooh we’re multi sensory!) out there might have noticed. This show was Lost. I never started watching Lost – in fact I always said that I’d watch it all when it’s finished – that way I wouldn’t have to have the annoyance of finding out exactly nothing every episode then waiting a week just to find out nothing again. Well very recently I was kindly reminded of the fact that Lost has very nearly finished now and that’s where the idea of this challenge hit me.

Watch all of Lost in time to watch the series finale.

The series finale is on the 23rd of May and a quick bit of maths reveals the fact that there are 120 episodes to watch leading up to the finale (including all the others in Season 6). Each episode is around forty two minutes long which means that in seventy six days, I need to watch eighty four hours of Lost – an average of sixty six minutes a day until then. This might sound pretty easy – especially when you consider how much time I spent watching film in the first two months – but when you factor in my three week holiday to Canada in a fortnight, having to keep up with current cinema releases for Casta and the inevitable lull in interest following the same characters for such an extended period, I think I’m on for a fair old challenge!

So in the meantime I’ll keep watching films but just not quite as avariciously as before – I won’t be doing my weekly updates, I might just do them every time I hit twelve films or something. Hopefully then I’ll come back to 365 after Lost is finished with renewed interest and a greater appetite for a more difficult challenge.

Wish me luck!

Project 365 – Week 9 – Feb 26th – Mar 4th

March 5, 2010

Another fairy lean week this week but then again if I continue to manage to watch seven per week from here on in, I’ll reach my target in about October so no complaints from me!

So this week we had:

115. Requiem for a Dream
116. The Darjeeling Limited
117. From Paris With Love
118. Lethal Weapon
119. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
120. Misery
121. State of Play

No highlights and lowlights this week as they were all really good films in their own ways (for details of why From Paris with Love isn’t completely rubbish, be sure to tune in to episode 13 of Casta). Watching Requiem for a Dream first thing on Friday morning with a hangover might not have been the best decision though…
